Stealing Jake

Stealing Jake, by Pam Hillman, is an engaging novel set in a small town outside of Chicago.  The main character, formerly known as “Light-fingered Livy,” is a former child of the streets and expert pick-pocket.  As an adult, she is now a Christian and working to right the wrongs of her childhood by assisting her friend in starting an orphanage.

When Livy meets the town sheriff, Jake Russell, she is both attracted to and frightened by him.  Together, though not always willingly, Livy and Jake work to solve the mystery of several robberies in their small town.  The robberies have been attributed to some new ‘street urchins” in town, but Livy is positive they are innocent.  In their journey together, they learn about forgiveness and mercy and love, in the process uncovering a seedy business that has rooted in their town and saving the lives of several orphans.

I really enjoyed this story.  It was captivating, with strong character development and a great plot.  If you are looking for an entertaining and positive historical fiction novel, I highly recommend reading this book!
