Homemade Twinkies

I LOVE Twinkies.  Especially frozen Twinkies.  I don’t know how I discovered the fact that frozen Twinkies are the best kind, but they totally are!  However, Twinkies are VERY bad for you, and Hostess may be going bankrupt.  🙁  So, learning how to make my own is a very good idea, I think.

I started with this recipe that I found way back in 2009 in a Family Circle magazine–one I bought because there were pictures of Twinkies on the cover and a promise that I could make my own!

I have been waiting since 2009 to make these because I wanted to use a canoe pan, but yesterday I just couldn’t wait anymore.  I used a cupcake pan instead.  And this is what my creations look like:

They are pretty good.  Definitely worth the 15 minutes it took to make them.  But they just aren’t “twinkie” enough.  Part of the problem was using white whole wheat flour, instead of all-purpose.  The filling is fluffy and creamy, but too buttercream tasting.
