Fearless Daughters of the Bible

I’ve been studying women and the Bible since my graduate school days at NAU–way back in 1999.  🙂  At the time, I found myself struggling with the feminist ideas taught in my courses, along with the conceptions of Christianity that went along with it.  The perspective that women are held back by patriarchal society–and that this is due to the God of the Bible–just didn’t jive with my experience, either with my personal walk with God or with the women of God I knew and admired.  Unfortunately, in an effort to counteract feminist thought, many churches have decided to advocate the idea that women are supposed to be the “handless, mouthless” horrors described by Sue Monk Kidd in Dance of the Dissident Daughter.

J. Lee Grady tackles the both the feminist misconceptions and those held by the church head on in his book Fearless Daughters of the Bible.  In the book, Grady discusses 22 women of the Bible, showing “that God enables His daughters for amazing–even impossible–exploits.”  In doing so, he challenges the status quo and encourages women to boldly step into the life God has planned for them.  The key is to trust in God and in His plan for your life–and He will give you the courage to do amazing things!

In chapters titled “Courage to Be a Pioneer,” “Courage to Challenge Tradition,”etc, Grady highlights women of the Bible, as well as women throughout history, who exemplify courage in several areas of life and provide examples of how God has used women for His purposes throughout history.  Each chapter includes scriptural discussions of the women of the Bible highlighted, along with questions for discussion and a “message from your Heavenly Father” designed to encourage women to be the person God has called them to be.

Whether you are struggling with your identity as a woman or you just need a little encouragement, this book is a great way to better understand God’s plan for women.  Unlike many other books that develop a doctrine of the “woman’s role” based on one or two verses taken out of context,  this book studies the entire biblical record, investigating how women in the Bible understood and lived out God’s instructions for their lives.  As women today, we can take heart that God does, indeed, find us valuable!
