I just finished reading Albert Mohler‘s The Conviction to Lead: 25 Principles for Leadership that Matters. This book is a must-read for anyone who aspires to leadership in any organization. Mohler’s principles are founded on the premise that, to lead, a leader must have a passion for his/her organization. It is that passion and conviction that will draw others to leaders and their causes: “The passionate leader is driven by the knowledge that the right beliefs, aimed at the right opportunity, can lead to earth-shaking changes.”
The topics in the book build upon each other, as Mohler gives solid principles for leadership ranging from qualities, like character and credibility, to skills, like communication and decision making. As an English teacher, I love that several of Mohler’s points revolve around reading and writing and speaking. Most impactful, perhaps, are the final chapters reminding readers that leadership is about leaving a legacy–building something that will be remembered and that honors God in our lives.
Giving examples from his own life and from iconic world leaders, Mohler illustrates each of his points with interesting stories and quotes. More importantly for me, each of the principles is based on a solid biblical foundation, as Mohler shows that, for Christians, especially, a vital organization depends on having a solid core of values and beliefs.
Whether you are a leader in a Christian organization or building your own business, Mohler’s book will give you several ideas to increase your impact as a leader. Definitely worth reading!
