In Knowing God by Name, David Wilkerson uses Bible teaching and personal anecdotes to explain the meaning and the power behind some of the names of God, including El Elyon, El Shaddai, Jehovah Jireh, Jehoval Rophi, Jehovah Makkeh, Jehoval Nissi, Jehoval Tsebaroth, Jehovah Shalom, Jehoval Tisdkinu, Jehoval Shammah, Jehovah Rohe, and Immanuel.  According the the author, his purpose in writing this book was to “obtain a heart knowledge of God’s names.  I wanted to have a personal revelation of His names–to appropriate their fullest meaning for my daily walk with Him” (7).

While he does cover more than one name in chapters 1 and 2, most of the names are covered in their own chapters.  For each name, Wilkerson shares both the biblical basis–showing how God reveals elements of His nature (via His name) in moments of crisis.  He also shares how we can then reach out to God through our understanding of His names when we, too, are in crisis.

I found this book (which is a re-publication of Hallowed Be Thy Names from 2001) to be very informative.  Readers will probably want to take one chapter at a time to really learn about each name.  Even though the book does not discuss all 23 names of God, I will keep this book as a reference!
