Exploring Christian Theology

In this second volume of Exploring Christian Theology, editors Nathan D. Hostein and Michael J. Svigel cover Creation, the Fall, and Salvation. Made to be digestible to the average person, the editors begin the book by relating the Bible to story-telling, specifically the hero cycle, in which we see four stages–Paradise, the Fall, Hell/Death, and Redemption. Their stated goal is that by “Exploring the biblical, theological, and historical foundation sof the doctrines of humanity and the fall and of salvation, we’ll come to better understand our own place in God’s unfolding story” (20).

Each section of the book includes a brief survey of the Christian doctrine. For example, God created humans on purpose and, in their pride, they rejected His rule. This is followed by key passages that helped to form the doctrine. Not only that, they discuss the lenses through which these passages can be viewed. (Think of a lens as a pair of sunglasses–if they are pink, you see the world as pink, etc. The lenses through which we read the Bible are our own experiences, our denominational home, etc.) Each section also includes sections titled “In Retrospect,” “Facts Never to Forget,” “Dangers to Avoid,””Principles to Put into Practice,” “Voices from the Past-Present,” and “Recommendations for your Library.” Altogether, the authors give readers a quick overview of the doctrines that are accessible to the lay person.

The book as a whole is accessible, with stories and a conversational tone, but at the same time heavy on theology, with quotes form Scripture and theologians throughout.
