Praying for Girls

Teri Lynne Underwood’s Praying for Girls is a great resource for moms–and really anyone who works with girls/teens.  This book came out of an online community invested in praying for the girls in their lives called Prayers for Girls. As the leader of this group, Underwood is a natural fit for authoring this book.

Underwood has divided the prayers in this book into five sections–“Her Identity,” “Her Heart,” “Her Mind,” “Her Relationships,” and “Her Purpose.” In each section, there are a few chapters that cover that particular topic.

In each chapter, Underwood introduces the topic with a quick story about either her daughter or another girl she knows, highlights the importance of that topic, provides specific prayers based on Scripture, addresses moms’ needs, and provides ideas for mother-daughter interactions for young, “middle” and big girls.

I think the most helpful part of this book is the actual prayers. With a blank for your daughter’s name in each short prayer, these sections are easy to use and provide moms a great starting point for praying over their daughter(s). In fact, you could easily focus on one chapter a day and pray through the book several times a month.

I thought the activities for girls were innovative, but some felt a little strange. I’m not sure that my almost 16 year old daughter would be super excited about me massaging her hands and feet while I gave her a Bible lesson. BUT, I do think that if you are looking for a neat way to connect with your daughter over Scripture, these activities could be a nice starting point. 🙂
