The Accidental Guardian

I am always so excited to get on the list to review one of Mary Connealy‘s books. I know I can count on a great story, a good romance, and some laughter. One of my favorite things about Connealy’s books, though, is that they are (usually) infused with faith. I loved the prayers of Sophie and her daughters and the day to day dependence on God in Mary’s early novels.

I’m happy to say that the Accidental Guardian, the first in Mary’s High Sierra Sweethearts series, does not disappoint. I love that Mary has brought back that infusion of faith into this story, which, though it does have some wry humor, has a much more serious tone to it than her other books.

In this story, we meet Deborah Harkness and Trace Riley. Deborah and her sister have been traveling with a wagon train helping a family with their young children. Early one morning, when they are taking the children out to go potty, bandits savagely murder the rest of the travelers and burn the bodies. The young women find themselves helpless and scared with two young children in the middle of the wilderness. Thankfully, Trace Riley, himself a survivor of the same type of vicious attack, arrives on the scene and, as a self-appointed guardian of the trail, becomes a guardian of sorts for these survivors.

Together, Deborah and Trace search for clues to help them uncover the culprits and keep them from striking again. As they face danger together, their faith in God strengthens, and they find something they never expected in each other.
