Before I Saw You

It’s funny how my taste in books changes with the stage of life I’m in. As a young mom, I loved reading Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti. I loved the heart pounding adventures and soul-stirring truths in their books. When life got hectic with a move across country almost a decade ago, I found respite in more frivolous works–historical romance has been my go-to genre for a long time. So, when my daughter (who is now 16) asked me to choose Before I Saw You, by Amy K. Sorrells,  from Tyndale House to review, I wasn’t sure whether I’d like it or not.

The novel tells the story of Jaycee Givens, a young woman with a tragic past who, despite making better choices and following Jesus, has found herself in another bad situation. Pregnant with an abusive boyfriend, Jaycee is determined to give her baby a chance in life, though it seems impossible.

With the help of Sudie, a quirky neighbor and friend whose wisdom and presence have steadied Jaycee through the tragedies of her young life, and her new friend, Gabe, Jaycee must learn to put her hope and her trust in God alone as she makes decisions that will shape her life and the life of her unborn baby.

This book is an achingly beautiful demonstration of the way that God can redeem our lives. He has promised that “all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” This is evident throughout the book as readers learn about Jaycee’s life and walk through her decision making process. Readers will feel the joy and the pain of this young woman’s life.

Though it isn’t a light-hearted romance or a spine-tingling thriller, Before I Saw You is worth reading. It’s a reminder to readers both that God loves us whereever we are and can redeem our lives AND that other lives are also worth redeeming. It’s a reminder to see the humanity and the worth in every single human being, despite his/her circumstances.
