Here’s another great book to start off 2017! Counterfeit Comforts: Freedom from the Imposters that Keep You from True Peace, Purpose, and Passion, by Robia Scott, takes readers on a journey to find true freedom from the stress and pain that is part of life here on earth.
“Pain is an indicator of a problem. However, the second we feel the slightest discomfort, our knee jerk reaction is to do anything to relieve us of pain as quickly as possible. In our culture, we are obsessed with alleviating a symptom…It is natural for us to want to stop pain, but self-medicating only achieves temporary results…The way to lasting results is to identify the source and go to work on that.” (p. 20)
We all have counterfeit comforts in our lives–those things that we turn to in times of stress or pain instead of turning them over to God–things like food, shopping, alcohol, etc. Rather than getting to the root of the problem, we cover it up with these counterfeit comforts to help us feel better momentarily. In her book, Scott walks readers through the process of finding freedom from these counterfeit comforts and getting to the root of the pain and stress.
I found the book to be authentic and encouraging. The author shares her journey and the steps she took to freedom in a way that encourages and empowers the reader to step out into his/her own journey. Not only does Scott provide a solid biblical foundation for her process, but she includes practical steps, like “stop, drop, and roll,” for dealing with pain. One of my favorite chapters is #20, “Choose Life, Speak Life.” Here, Scott gives verses for multiple situations and shows how to state them in the first person to apply them to your situation. This is so powerful!
If you find yourself falling back into the same habits, whether it be overeating, shopping, etc or you are just feeling STUCK in your life, I highly recommend this book as a guide to a new way of doing life.
