Grumble Hallelujah

I have to admit that I’m usually a non-fiction gal.  (I spend tons of time with academic, non-fiction stuff, so give me a break! lol)  I scour Tyndale and Booksneeze for a great story that will allow me to walk in someone else’s shoes for awhile.  Reading is my guilty pleasure, after all!

And yet, I was oddly drawn by Grumble, Hallelujah by Caryn Dahlstrand Rivadeneira.  Was it the eyecatching cover reminiscent of Ramona Quimby?  Was it the catchy title?  Or was it maybe the cry of my own heart to love my own life again?

 

From the first line of the introduction, I was hooked.  Caryn’s (yes, I am on a first name basis with this author I have never met) writing style gives readers a glimpse into who she is.  With her stories, her witty asides, even her asterisked postscripts on the bottoms of the pages.

But even more so, my heart resonates with the concept of grumbling hallelujahs.  I love that she gives us all permission to grieve our losses in life–even if they do seem light in comparison to the heavy burdens of others.  I love her solid suggestions for moving forward after that grieving process and learning to love your life again–in chapters like, “Live on the Lookout” for what God is doing in your life, “Live Satisfied” and let go of envy, and “”Live free” of the many chains that seem to hold us back.

This book was witty, therapeutic, and filled with great insight into biblical truth about living with where we are and trusting God’s plan.  The prayers at the end of each chapter brought me to tears as I faced up to some of the things in my own life.  This book resonated with my heart in a way that not many do.  It is a book I will read again…and again.  It’s a book I will give as a gift (yes, I already have a list of people who NEED to read this!).  And it’s a book I highly recommend if you’ve faced some losses in your life and feel that desire inside to be able to begin again and really love the life your living now.
