The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck

The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck, by Kathleen Y’Barbo, is cute, yet predictable.  The main character, Charlotte, is the daughter of a wealthy American with family ties to royalty in England.  Charlotte is spoiled, yet independent.  What she wants more than anything is to study math and help her father run the family business.  Marriage seems to be inconvenient–something that will keep her from doing the things that she really wants to do.

Ironically, the man her father arranges for her to marry feels the same way.  An astronomer with a title, Alex Hambly just wants to study the stars…but the death of his father makes it his obligation to find a way to save the family from ruin.  Charlotte’s father admires the way that Alex ‘handles’ his daughter, and so he cooks up a scheme to put them together by offering both of them their heart’s desires.  Charlotte gets to go to school, and Alex can save his family and continue his work.  Both decide that in four years, they will simply go through with the ceremony and then have their marriage annulled.

What they don’t count on is God’s plan for their lives.  What they can’t see, but Charlotte’s father can, is that they do belong together.  Throughout the story, both characters learn to trust God and His plans for them, ultimately leading them together.

Although the main storyline is predictable, there is another story about Charlotte’s parents running through the main one that captured my interest and provided additional depth to the characters and the plot development.  I would have liked to have seen that story line developed more.  However, since this is the third in a series, perhaps the author provided what I wanted in one of the previous books.
