What Once Was Lost

Christina Willems is all alone in the world…well, except for her “family,” the residents of the poor farm she continues to run after her father’s death.  People who have nowhere else to go are sent to her–orphans, widows, elderly couples, people with handicaps.  Christina loves each of the residents on her farm and works hard to provide for them and to pull them together into a family.

But when the worst happens and a fire destroys the house, Christina is forced to find homes for all of her residents.  One of the residents, a blind boy named Tommy, proves to be the most difficult to place.  Her last hope is the mill owner, Levi, at the edge of town.  Reluctantly, Levi agrees to take Tommy and begins teaching him how to be self-reliant.   Levi, despite his own struggles to open his heart, finds that he truly cares for Tommy AND Christina.

If a confusing relationship with Levi and the displacement of her family isn’t enough, as Christina struggles with finding her own way, she realizes that she is up against more than a fire–someone is trying to keep her from rebuilding and continuing the work her parents started, and it seems that Christina’s world is unraveling.

The troubles with the farm force Christina to take a look at her own motivations.  Is the poor farm really her calling, or is she continuing the work because it makes her feel important and connected to her parents?  Christina has to decide whether she will allow God to lead her, or whether she will continue to try to make her own way.

What Once Was Lost is an inspiring novel with an interesting storyline–overall a good read.
