The Killing Tide is the first book in Dani Pettrey’s latest series, The Coastal Guardians.  Dani Pettrey’s style reminds me a lot of Dee Henderson because she ties together romance and suspense so well. Like Henderson, Pettrey explores the minds and hearts of her characters, adding depth by digging into their faith and motivations.

In this story, readers gtet to know Gabby Rowley, a fiercely determined investigative reporter who will do anything, even put her life on the line, to uncover the truth. At the beginning of the book, Gabby narrowly escapes death and is sent off to her family for protection. Of course, once there, she is thrown into the middle of another mystery as several Coast Guard officers end up dead. Even as Gabby is determined to seek justice here, all of her family and friends, including Finn Walker, are kept on their toes trying to keep her safe.

Though I really loved the action in the book and the twists and turns in the plot, it seemed to me that Gabby took too many unnecessary risks. For someone who is afraid for her life, and yet supposedly has a ton of experience with dangerous investigations, she seems too willing to throw herself into danger without thinking of the consequences.

Of course, this is part of the story–Gabby has to learn to trust God and others with her life, instead of working so hard to earn value.

This a great book, and it’s releasing on 8/6!
