The Spice King

From the publisher:

Gray Delacroix has dedicated his life to building an acclaimed global spice empire, but it has come at a cost. Resolved to salvage his family before it spirals out of control, he returns to his ancestral home to save his brother and sister before it’s too late.

As a junior botanist for the Smithsonian, Annabelle Larkin has been charged with the impossible task of gaining access to the notoriously private Delacroix plant collection. If she fails, she will be out of a job and the family farm in Kansas will go under. She has no idea that in gaining entrance to the Delacroix world, she will unwittingly step into a web of dangerous political intrigue far beyond her experience.

Unable to deny her attraction to the reclusive business tycoon, Annabelle will be forced to choose between her heart and loyalty to her country. Can Gray and Annabelle find a way through the storm of scandal without destroying the family Gray is fighting to save?

Elizabeth Camden‘s The Spice King will be available on September 3rd! I really enjoyed reading Gray & Annabelle’s story, but, even more so, I enjoyed getting a peek into the early days of the food industry. It was fascinating to see that many of the same feelings shared by those who advocated for accurate labels on food packaging are still valid today. Like many of my ‘crunchy mama’ friends, I am concerned about the use of additives to our foods that are not natural. Whether it’s high fructose corn syrup or MSG or those mysterious “artificial and natural flavors,” knowing what is actually in our food is important.

In this story, Gray is an advocate for real foods. He is working on the process of creating a liquid vanilla that is truly vanilla, not a chemical concoction. His main competitor, however, is focused on making the most money, regardless of the quality of their product. (They even sell applesauce that is 100% pumpkin puree!!) Though he initially doesn’t trust the government to regulate the food industry, Annabelle, who works closely with the Department of Agriculture, encourages him to trust them…and her. They work together to create change.

Despite their many missteps and differences of opinion, Gray and Annabelle find themselves drawn to each other. In the process of learning to trust each other, they learn about forgiveness and love.

I highly recommend this book!
