I’ve been thinking about making my own laundry soap for awhile, so, when I ran out of the last of my Melaleuca detergent, I decided to give it a go.
The simplest recipe I found has just three ingredients–fels naptha, washing soda, and Borax. You can add scents and other ingredients, like this blogger does http://campwander.blogspot.com/2012/08/top-3-diy-lavender-laundry-essentials.html?spref=fb&m=1, but I think the three ingredients smell nice and clean.
The first time around, I grated the fels naptha bar, then processed it in a food processor, then mixed in a cup each of the washing soda and Borax. The second time, I just broke up the bar and processed it, and I doubled the washing soda and borax.
It works. Clothes get clean, but I do miss the smell of fresh laundry. Laundry smells clean, but doesn’t have that strong scent that I love when I put clean sheets on the bed. :). Making my own detergent is definitely cheap and easy…but I’m not sure if I will continue with it.
What do you think? Is it worth it?
