The Captain Takes a Wife is the first book I have read from Doris Durbin. I was intrigued by the plot–Captain Harry Richardson literally runs into a runaway bride, Sarah Franklin, and decides to marry her to keep her safe.
It turns out that Sarah’s uncle, who is her guardian and the trustee of her late parents’ estate, is mixed up in a money laundering scheme. When she runs away from the marriage her uncle arranged, Sarah finds that she is being chased by the outlaws.
Thinking that marriage will save her, Harry, who is on his way to become a pastor, marries Sarah on the train. Unfortunately, Sarah has something else the criminals want, and they find that they are all in danger.
I really liked the plot of the book, and it has the potential to be a really fun story. However, the writing was a bit stilted. In addition, I didn’t appreciate the TMI moments throughout the book. I don’t think I would try another of Durbin’s books.
