Waiting for Dawn

Waiting for Dawn is the prequel to the Team Hope series. In the story, we meet Jim Micah, John, and Lacey. The three met in high school and became best friends. However, though Micah and Lacey have feelings for each other, she was put off by his inability to tell her how she feels and ended up dating John for 8 years instead. This has torn Micah apart, but he bore it in silence. In the book, John and Lacey are always referred to by their first names, while Jim Micah is referred to by his last name.)

In this novella, the three are grown up. Both John and Micah are overseas in the military, while Lacey has been working with the government. The book begins with Micah being captured while on a mission. Though John & Lacey have broken up, they team up again to rescue Micah from his captors in the middle east. After the rescue, Micah still can’t tell Lacey how he feels, which makes her fly into John’s arms. Micah turns to God, trusting in His will, while Lacey turns away, forging her own way.

While the story is well-written and kept my attention, it seems a little odd. Lacey, who has never been in the military, somehow sneaks into Iraq to rescue Micah from the enemy. Micah and John, supposedly best friends, love the same girl but never talk about it. The novella ends abruptly, without really wrapping anything up, which I suppose is the point. I did like the focus on trusting in God throughout the story, as Micah learns to rely on Him no matter his circumstances. Since the story was written for fans of the series, which I haven’t yet read, I’m going to have to read the rest of the story to see how this all plays out. It definitely makes me want to find out what happens next.

Thanks to Tyndale and Net Galley for a free copy of the e-book in exchange for my unbiased review.
