Night of the Living Dead Christian

Since my husband is such a big zombie fan, I had to read Matt Mikalatos‘ new book, Night of the Living Dead Christian.  In this surprisingly thought-provoking book, Mikalatos presents an analogy of the Christian life that is both humorous and insightful.

Many people today call themselves Christians, but are not truly transformed by the saving power of Christ.  As a college professor, I read papers all the time with accusations against Christians–they are hateful, they are bigots, they are closed-minded, etc, etc.  The fact is, though, that many of the examples students (and others) cite consist of people who have a big Christian name tag on their chest, but whose actions do not reflect the Christian faith.  Jesus said that we would know a tree by its fruit-hatred is not one of the fruits of the spirit!  This doesn’t mean, of course, that we accept sin–but that we accept sinners, just as Jesus did.  Following Christ means attracting others to him…and being a monster certainly won’t do that! On the flip side, as Christians, we must realize that the battle with sin is continuous. God loves us no matter our past or present mistakes, but He is capable of transforming us.

In Night of the Living Dead Christian:  One man’s ferociously funny quest to discover what it means to be truly transformed, Mikalatos presents readers with a world in which Christians of all types show up as monsters from science fiction–including zombies, vampires, werewolves, and even mad scientists.  Mikalatos himself plays a role in the book, as he tries to save his werewolf friend from the anger within and convince him that redemption is possible–even for him.  In the process, the characters see the redemptive power of Christ to overcome the monsters that hide within every one of us.  There is even a fun guide at the end of the book with characteristics of these and other monsters–you know, just in case one might be lurking inside of you.
