  Face to Face with Jesus by Samma Habib & Bodie Theoene is the autobiographical tale of a woman born Muslim in the Middle East who converted to Christianity as a teen.  In the process of her conversion, Samaa felt that God changed her name from Mariam (meaning love) to Samaa, which means Heaven.

In the book, Samaa shares the story of her persecution after she became a Christian in the midst of a terrible crisis in her country.  Not only was she persecuted by her neighbors, but by her own family, as well.  In fact, she was beaten almost to death by her older brother, and then strangled and left for dead by her own father.  Amazingly, Samaa did not let this persecution hamper her enthusiasm for sharing her new faith–and she never gave up on sharing the light and joy of Christ with each member of her family, rejoicing as, one by one, they came to faith in Christ.

Some readers will find courage from her courage.  Others will be inspired by the miracles and the visions that she shares.  Personally, I found her story enlightening–she shares how utterly without hope she was in her Muslim faith.  It was the love and hope and joy of Christ that drew her in–and the persistence of His presence even as she faced severe persecution that grew her faith.  As believers, we too often think about what to say…when really all we need to do is shine the light of Christ–to give love and hope to a world without either.

Samaa’s story is captivating, and I highly recommend the book as a whole.  I like that the book begins with the bomb that took her life and then goes back to share her life story.  However, the timeline of the book is not consecutive.  I often got confused as she would talk about one sister being with her at church and then go back 3 years to her conversion, etc.  Especially with so many names to keep track of, the unpredictable time sequences did not help!
