The Princess Within, for teens: Discovering Your Royal Inheritance

Having a daughter is a scary thing these days.  I pray that my Megan will know who she is and draw on God’s word to give her strength and wisdom as she grows up.  I hope that we are teaching her strong core values that are built on a strong foundation.  But we can’t protect her from everything–and I can always use advice!  So, whenever I see a book written for teen girls, I pick it up for future reference.

Serita Ann Jakes first published her diary, as written to her “Secret Keeper,” 15 years ago.  In this latest version for teens, The Princess Within:  Discovering Your Royal Inheritance, Serita longs to speak truth and life into the hearts of girls.  In her words to her readers, Serita says, “I wrote this book to remind you that you aren’t powerless, but powerful, thanks to your heavenly Father–the King of the Universe” (16).

Speaking directly to teen girls, Serita addresses issues from the typical, parents and self-image, to the weighty–abuse and shame.  With a strong focus on biblical truth, Serita intersperses a fairy tale story about a girl named Ella (she begins the book with a quiz to find out which Disney princess you are like) with her own experiences (through excerpts from her diary) and letters from other girls to speak truth into teen girls’ lives about who they are in Christ.  She even includes a playlist of songs at the beginning of each chapter!  One of the best parts of the book is the end, where Serita has included the plan of salvation, a ton of resources on everything from abuse to homelessness, and encouraging Bible verses.

While some of the issues covered in the book are definitely too weighty for my 12 year old, I think this is a handy book to have around for future reference–even as a reference to say, “Here…read this chapter.”  I really like the reminder to girls that they truly are God’s Princesses.  Rather than focusing on party dresses, though, Serita talks about the power that comes with that–the power to make good choices and align themselves with their heavenly Father.  Good stuff!
