A Heart Most Certain

In her latest book, A Heart Most Certain, Melissa Jagears explores what it means to truly care for others. Lydia King is a young woman with a dying mother and a father who has gambled away her future. She believes the only way to care for her mother is to marry Sebastian Little. In order to win him, she must win over his mother, who is the head of the Teaville Moral Society. To prove her worth, Lydia must procure a donation for new sewing machines from the notoriously stingy and wealthy Nicholas Lowe.

Lydia, who refuses to accept Nicholas’ flat out refusal of her request, is soon to learn that he is not all he appears. As he takes her on a journey to discover true charity, Lydia faces dangers and learns that her intended is not all he appears to be, either. She must decide whether she will follow her heart or take the ‘safe’ course, even if that is not what she wants for her life.

I enjoyed this story. The characters and the plot are interesting, and the story made me consider what it truly means to “care for the least of these.” I did find it annoying that both Lydia and Nicholas seemed to always expect the worst from the other, despite what they had been through together.
