More Than Meets the Eye is Karen Witemeyer‘s latest novel and the first book in Witemeyer’s new Patchwork Family Series. In this novel, readers meet the Hamilton family–a trio consisting of Evangeline, Zach, and Seth. The three siblings are, in fact, not related at all. They are orphans, thrown together in difficult circumstances, who choose to create a family.

Evangeline, who is the baby of the family, has one bright blue and one dark brown eye–a feature that makes her an outcast among most people. A newcomer to town, Logan Fowler, however, finds Evangeline a ray of sunshine and doesn’t understand why people can’t see past her interesting eyes.

Unfortunately, Logan is not all he appears, either. Not a newcomer at all, Logan is back in town to recover his family’s land–land that his father lost in a wager when Logan was a young boy. He blames Zach for, not only the loss of the family farm, but also the loss of his father and the illness of his mother.

The theme of the story is captured nicely in the title, which is more than a connection to Evangeline’s eye color. Many of the characters in this story are not as they appear. With plenty of adventure, faith, and humor, Karen Witemeyer shows that, with God’s help, people can overcome all sorts of obstacles to become who they were created to be. We have to put our faith in God and allow Him to direct our paths because things are not always as they appear!
