Steadfast Heart

Steadfast Heart is the first of Traci Peterson‘s Brides of Seattle series.  This book focuses on two best friends who live in Seattle in the late 1880s.  Lenore Fulcher hopes for a marriage of true love, but her father just wants her to marry someone! While Lenore is from a wealthy family, her best friend, Abrianna, lives at the Madison Bridal School with her three adopted “aunts.”  The three older ladies came together to start the Bridal School as a way to help young ladies learn the skills needed to become proper wives.  As an orphan, Abrianna is both a student of the school and a part of the family.

While Abrianna spends her days getting into trouble by trying to help the poor in her city, Lenore is simply trying to avoid being married off to her father’s business partner–who is 17 years her senior.  When they meet Kelbein Booth, a Chicago lawyer searching for his missing sister, things begin to get interesting.

I really enjoyed the characters in the book, but, while it is Lenore’s and Kelbein’s love story that takes center stage, much of the book centers around Abrianna and her friend, Wade.  The romance between Lenore and Kelbein is based on not much more than longing for each other while they are apart, while Abrianna and Wade actually work together and interact with each other throughout the book.  In other words, the characters who are developed in this book are NOT the characters the book is supposed to be about.  Nonetheless, I enjoyed it and wouldn’t mind reading another in the series.
