Delivery

Last week, I received an e-mail from Tyndale House explaining a new review program–for e-books. I have never read an e-book–I just like the feel of a book in my hands. Besides, I don’t have an e-book reader. BUT, I thought I might like to try it and the titles looked interesting, so I sent in a response. A few days later, I was really bored and didn’t want to read any of my old favorites–so I thought I’d give this e-book thing a try.

My first read was Delivery, by Diana Prusik. Delivery takes the reader on a winding journey through the main character’s life. Through flashbacks, we learn of some great tragedies that have befallen her family, and, as the story continues, Livy walks through additional losses. Throughout the story, Livy is reminded by her friends and family that God is in control–that He offers unconditional love and comfort if only she will turn to Him. Unfortunately, it takes Livy several years to come to the place where she can accept that love, and she turns to alcohol in the meantime.

Livy’s family owns a flower shop in her small town, and much of the story takes place in this location. It is here that we really get to know who Livy is and see her relationship to the town through her relationship with her job.

While the book has an interesting plot and characters, it was difficult for me to get involved in the story. I’m not sure whether it was reading the book on the computer or the writing, but I just didn’t feel that connected with the characters. The story also seemed to go on too long. Although perhaps realistic, I didn’t want to wait years for Livy to finally figure things out and get her life back on track. And the final picture of Livy at peace as an old woman just didn’t ring true. I wanted to see the change in her life and her relationships occur, not have to imagine them.  Overall, though, Delivery is a nice story with a great message.

Disclaimer: I was provided free access to the electronic version of this book via netgalley in return for my honest review.
