The Seraph Seal

The Seraph Seal, co-written by Leonard Sweet and Lori Wagner, is an apocalyptic novel set in 2048.  Paul Binder, a history professor at the University of Virginia finds himself at the center of an ancient end-times prophecy.  According to the prophecy, the world is at a turning point, and Paul plays a central role in ushering in the new age–whether one of good or evil.

Paul, along with eight others, was born on December 21, 2012 at 2100.  Each of the eight has a birthmark representing the four elements.  His task is to bring together the right four people.  In the process, he must discover his own faith and reconcile his previous conceptions of the world with what he is discovering about God and his place in the fate of the world.

While Paul works to figure out what is happening in his life, US President Matthew Serafino, who is one of the eight, is engaged in his own quest–a quest for ultimate power.  Through his connections with demonic influences, Serafino is slowly discovering the secret to that power–bringing together the four.

While the book is well written, a great read, and focuses on faith in Christ, the one flaw is that it is not biblical at all.  The whole premise of the book is that there is an extra-biblical prophecy that determines the fate of the world.  Rather than Christ coming and redeeming His people and issuing in the judgment, we find that Paul is the person who will bring together people of faith and bring them to a portal to another dimension. Rather than redeeming the earth, they are leaving it.  With all of the secular apocalyptic stories out there, it’s nice to have one with at least a Christian perspective, but the clear departure from biblical truth makes it less than believable.
