Behind the Scenes

After reading Jen Turano‘s At Your Request, the prequel novella to her Apart from the Crowd series, I couldn’t wait to dive into the first book, Behind the Scenes (download FREE here!). This fun series centers around the adventures of a group of wallflowers–these were women who for a variety of reasons were not part of the popular crowd at social events.

Behind the Scenes is the story of delightfully named Permilia Griswold, who uses her position as a wallflower to write an undercover column on the lives of the high-society crowd. Of course, being a wallflower also allows her to avoid the social blunders she inevitably makes that enrage and embarrass her step-mother.

Permilia spent her life following behind her father as he built up his business in mining. Her expected future taking over his company falls apart when her father marries her step-mother in the hopes of helping Permilia become the high-society woman he thinks she should be.

While helping a friend, Permilia accidentally finds herself overhearing a plot to take the life of Mr. Asher Rutherford, an up and coming (and well-sought after) businessman. The two find themselves caught up in a mysterious plot full of adventure, danger, and lots of laughter.

I found myself laughing out loud through much of the book. Though some of the plot resolution was a little far-fetched, this was a really fun novel. As I have come to expect from Turano, the characters are well-developed, the plot is interesting and twisting, and there is a lot of humor and a bit of romance. It’s a wonderful combination perfect for a summer afternoon!
