What does my day look like?

I just read an article that details what one mom does all day.  Her point was to show how busy stay-at-home moms are, but, I have to be honest, her day sounds nothing like any day I’ve ever had as a stay-at-home mom.

These days, my kids being 5,7, & 9, our days do look a little different than they did when they were younger.  Here’s my typical day..

7:30 Wake up, read my Bible.  Kids are up and getting their breakfast (unless they want me to make pancakes).  Check my e-mail.

8:00 go for a run–I’m working on an Ease into 5K program, and the kids run with me.  We’re doing about 2 miles 3x each week.

8:30–shower & eat breakfast (this is when I make pancakes for the kids)  Pick up the house before school.

9:00-12  School time.  Between 10-10:30, we have recess, which is when I work on my garden.  I have tomatoes, carrots, a variety of lettuce, radishes, onions, zucchini, squash, cucumbers, broccoli, and celery going now.

12-12:30 lunch time  After lunch, the kids generally play outside while I work.  Sometimes they get to watch one movie.

12:30-1:30  Check e-mails and facilitate discussions for the online composition courses that I teach while the kids play.

1:30-2:30  Make calls to schedule appointments for my business.

3:30-4:30  Each day I have a different project to work on, whether it’s my blog, my newsletter, etc.

4:30-  I try to leave my afternoons free to hang out outside with the kids, but a lot of the time I end up grading or doing extra work for my business or cleaning up again.

Around 6:00 we eat dinner.  8:00 is bedtime for the kids.  After bedtime, I work on the courses I am taking for my PhD and try to get other stuff done.

On Thursdays, I do laundry throughout the day.  On Fridays, we clean the house. And depending on the week, I may have random appointments throughout the day that we have to work around.

My days are pretty organized–some things may take longer than others, and sometimes there are extra projects to do, like getting stuff ready for taxes, but overall, I find that my days are full.  I accomplish a lot each day. Some days we get behind schedule, but we still get everything done without having meltdowns.

When the kids were little, my days weren’t much different.  When Megan was a baby, we would get up and eat breakfast.  In those days, I made something different every day–pancakes, scrambled eggs, yogurt smoothies, oatmeal.  Then we would go for a walk, then have morning nap.  During Megan’s morning nap, I would clean up the house & work on Ryan’s business (invoices, etc).  Then we had lunchtime.  After lunch, we would play until afternoon nap. During her afternoon nap, I would work on my classes.  After naptime, we played & worked together to make dinner, waiting for Daddy to get home.  We liked doing puzzles, reading books, and coloring with sidewalk chalk.  Yes, there were bad days, but for the most part, we had a pretty good routine.

Reading that article made me feel like a crazy person.   But it doesn’t have to be that way.  As a mom, you can choose to make your day whatever you want.  When your kids are little, keep it simple.  Kids thrive on a schedule.  You can accomplish much in a day and still have a peaceful home.

Welcome!
