A Draw of Kings

20140318-134002.jpgI discovered author Patrick Carr about a year ago and quickly devoured the first two books in his The Staff & the Sword series. I had forgotten about it until the latest in the series, A Draw of Kings, turned up in the list for Bethany House fiction reviews.

The series is set in the fictional country of Illustra, which is run by a king on the verge of death and a council of religious leaders called the Judica. All the important decisions are made by consulting readers, who carve circles out of wood that reveal the answers to questions asked by the reader.

The religion is a mirror of Christianity in a way…but their ‘Bible’ has been lost, so all their teachings are based on memories of the list book. The central concern of the series is the question of who will succeed the dying king. It is believed that the king on the throne prevents evil from invading the kingdom.

The central characters are Errol, a former town drunk with an abusive father and the strongest reader in the kingdom, and Liam, a kingly young man also from Errol’s home town who has it all–looks, kindness, battle skills. The problem is that folks can’t determine which of them is supposed to be king–all the lots come up divided.

In this final novel in the series, the question finally finds it’s answer. As the many characters face adventures all over the fictional world, they discover the most important truth…that Aurae (their God) is knowable. This knowledge heals hearts and helps the good guys in their quest to find the true heir to the throne and save Illustra.

This series has lots of adventure & great character development. A really great series!
