God’s Smuggler

God’s Smuggler is the story of Brother Andrew, the founder of Open Door Ministries. Andrew spent much of his life smuggling Bibles into communist countries, and this book is his story as told to John and Elizabeth Sherrill. The book was originally published in 1967, but has recently been updated with expanded text and republished by Open Door.

The book begins with a short introduction to Brother Andrew, in which the Sherrills share their first experience meeting with Andrew in their home, and the book ends with a Q & A with Andrew. The new version also includes photos from Brother Andrew’s life, which help the reader to visualize some of the events told in the story.

Born in the late 20s in Holland, Andrew was a teenager during the German occupation of his small town during World War II. The personal details he shares about his life, his family, his neighbors, and his town make this time in history come to life for the reader. His blunt and honest telling of his conversion and decision to become a missionary bringing Bibles to people who desperately needed and wanted them is compelling. Though he tells the story in a way that downplays his courage and the risks he (and his fellow workers) took, it is clear that he had some very harrowing experiences.

Not only does his story challenge readers to find their own purpose, but it opens their eyes to the realities of life in a communist country, particularly during the 50s and 60s. The desperation of people to read an actual Bible and the hope that it gives them is eye-opening–and for most Americans it is difficult to imagine the situations believers in these countries lived through. We so often take our religious freedoms for granted…Brother Andrew’s story forces us to take a look at what our lives would be like without that freedom.
