Live Smart

I grabbed this copy of Live Smart: Preparing for the Future God Wants for You by Dan Dumas because I gravitate toward books meant to help teens navigate through life. As a parent of four (my oldest just turned 14!), I, of course, want the best for my kids. They need to learn how to make choices that will help them live a joyful life. It’s all too easy to fall into the trap of making poor choices that lead to regret and sadness.

Dan Dumas is a college pastor with 14 years of helping young people under his belt, in addition to some pretty impressive Christian leadership experience. In his book, he offers teens some advice on how to live so that they can maximize their potential in life. Live Smart is divided into four parts: “You + God,” “You + Others,” “You + Yourself,” and “You + Your Gospel.” In each part, he offers interesting stories, solid advice, and lots of Scripture to support what he says.

Though at times I felt the book was a bit too simple (it often seems that he is talking down to the reader), it may be that I am a parent and not a teenager. However, I wonder if teens who really need to hear this information might not be turned off by this tone. All in all, this is a book with solid advice and great Scriptural support.
